John Nevins '17, Staff Writer

Laughing. We all laugh. We laugh when we see some comedians on a TV show, when we see someone slip and fall on a banana peel, or when we see a coyote try to kill a roadrunner. There are some people who argue though that laughing is bad for you, it could cause things such as headaches, dislocated jaw, or even could cause someone to have a stroke. These people are disproving the fact that laughter is the best medicine. But it actually is. Besides laughter making you feel good after you see something really funny, it also has some health benefits.

On healthguide.com, it says that these benefits can help the human body throughout its lifetime. One thing it helps with is reducing stress hormones. What this means is laughter relieves you of your stress, so sometimes when you’re feeling stressed out and then you laugh you feel really good and feel de-stressed. Another health benefit is laughter helps with memory and learning. According to Dr. Lee Berk, “the less stress you have, the better memory you have.” He also said that “humor reduces stress hormones, lowers your blood pressure, and it increases your mood state.” So laughter actually calms you down and makes you less stressed.

Other health benefits to laughter are that it boosts T-cells. They are cells that help your immune system to help your body fight viruses so the more of them you have, the better. It also lowers blood sugar. Having a lowered blood sugar is good because a high blood sugar causes headaches, fatigue, and blurred vision, so it’s better to have low blood sugar than high blood sugar. It also improves cardiac health. This increases the health of your heart so you can basically live. It also helps people sleep; we all need sleep so we have the energy to go through the day relaxed and refreshed. And for a fun fact, laughter is great ab workout.

Laughter helps your body to get through one day and helps get through the rest of your life. So laughter really is the best medicine.
