The classic and beloved children’s tale, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” was brought to the Cherry Hill High School West stage the last weekend of March and the first weekend of April. The production was a success. For those who don’t know, the show is about Charlie Bucket, an imaginative boy, who dreams of acquiring a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. The winners of the golden tickets, including Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, and Mike Teavee, get lessons about selfishness and greed from Willy Wonka during the factory tour.
Ultimately, Charlie’s humble and loyal nature is noticed by Mr. Wonka, leading to a reward beyond his wildest dreams. The West musical included various songs performed by the cast. Notable musical numbers include “The Candy Man,” “Willy Wonka! Willy Wonka!,” “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” and “Pure Imagination.” The score pays homage to Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley’s songs from the 1971 film and features original songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Senior Julian Dappolone played the titular Willy Wonka, the chocolate maker. Senior Tanayjiah Jackson played Violet Beauregarde, a gum-chewer who finds a golden ticket. Junior Sydney Dunn-Krabs played Augustus Gloop, a candy-loving child. The production includes a cast of over 60 students and a crew of about 40, promising extensive tech work. Performers and others involved have expressed enthusiasm for the show’s sets and costumes, which Ms.Messias has described as magical, colorful, and fun. Jackson is looking forward to the tech aspects of the show. The show was performed in West’s auditorium from March 28 to 30 and April 4 to 6, 2025. Opening night was on Friday, March 28th, and had a positive reception from audiences in town.
