As January comes and goes yearly, one specific day always sticks out.  That day is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  This day is meant to honor the brave and courageous man who started a new beginning for the Black community.  He fought for equality and racial justice and did a good job doing it. The holiday takes place on the third Monday of January, which is the 17th of this year. King was assassinated in 1968, but it wasn’t until 1983 during the Reagan administration that the holiday was established. It wasn’t until 1986 that Martin Luther King Jr. Day became widely observed in the United States.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the life and legacy of a man who created hope for America. Although his words alone were inspiring, he put his life on the line fighting for freedom and justice. He paved the path for standing up for what is right.  The day celebrates equality in a society that he dreamed of. He stood up to make a difference for every race. His words spoke for every nationality, to feel no segregation.   Although racism still exists today, he made tremendous strides in pushing against segregation.  He was a brave man who left a significant mark on the world.
