Being an influence on society is more than meets the eye. With the constant media coverage and management censoring what you can say, it’s almost as if you are living in a hollow case, never being able to express or say what you actually have on your mind.
With what’s going on in the world today, there are so many tragedies and politically based arguments. When an influence on society, you aren’t allowed to talk about those topics.
Munroe Bergdof was the first transgender woman to be the face of L’Oreal’s campaign. Being the face of the campaign she was expected to be pristine and unbiased, with no political output. She spoke out on Facebook about white supremacists. As the outcome of her Facebook post, L’Oreal fired Bergdof and she lost her face on L’Oreal’s websites and campaign.
According to an interview between thegaurdian.com and Munore Bergdof, Bergdof states, “The most ridiculous thing is that you call out racism and they respond with more racism. It just doesn’t make any sense.”
After many interviews and the medias coverage that Munroe was given, she got in many disputes on Twitter, giving more media coverage to the aspect of racism and what is going on in the world today.
Munroe Bergdof accepted the statements of L’Oreal’s biggest competition and rival, Llamasqua, to be the face of the company, and the campaign of self love and self identity. Munroe Bergdof was given the freedom to speak out on what she believes in and is encouraged to show the world what she believes in. Speaking out about what you believe in should never be a second option, and you should never be limited to what you can say on social media.
The first amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
With the freedom of speech all people are given, big companies are violating their employees’ first amendment rights by limiting what they are able to say in media. Censorship, especially during the political uprising in America, is not fair when people are having their voice taken away from them.
