Snowstorm Strikes the Northeast

A harsh snowstorm occurred the weekend of January 28th, 2022, coating the East Coast with varying inches of snow.  This caused many power outages, coastal flooding, and flight delays across the region.  According to BBC, “Nearly 6,000 US flights were cancelled across the weekend.”

Massachusetts and many areas on the coast had many power outages, as expected, according to NBC. Similarly, AccuWeather stated, “Power outages across Massachusetts were gradually declining overnight, according to PowerOutage.US, however, the number of outages is still above 60,000 early Sunday morning.”

However, the East Coast had huge differences in snow accumulation.  Massachusetts and Maine were hit hardest, while New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut only received around 5 inches of snow out of the expected 8. South Carolina reported one inch of snow, AccuWeather wrote. “Some areas of Massachusetts have seen as much as 2.5ft (75cm) of snow, with locals told to hunker down inside,” BBC mentioned.

Low temperatures also swept the region, leaving many areas in subzero conditions.   AccuWeather stated, “AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures at this hour range from 5 degrees Fahrenheit in New York City to minus 3 F in Boston and minus 7 F in Providence, Rhode Island.”  However, Sunday was even worse for some, due to dangerous windchills.  According to NY Times, “Subzero temperatures hit parts of Massachusetts and Maine early Sunday, and wind chills in the Worcester, Mass., area were as low as minus 16 degrees — so severe that they “could cause frostbite on

exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes,” the Weather Service warned.”

As of Monday, storm cleanups are occurring in Massachusetts and the most affected regions.  Numerous areas across the East Coast are still without power.  In Cape Cod, most power is expected to be restored.  Many schools in Massachusetts and the surrounding areas had a snow day on Monday, according to Boston Globe.
