On February 2, 2020 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida Super Bowl 54 took place with the Kansas City Chiefs playing against the San Francisco 49ers. The Kansas City Chiefs took home the Vince Lombardi Trophy with a win of 31-20.
This was the Chief’s first Super Bowl win in more than 50 years although, at first, the 49ers were in control of the Chiefs. They held a 20-10 lead mid-way through the fourth quarter until a 44-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Tyreek Hill on 3rd-and-15 which was a major comeback. Receiver Sammy Watkins said, “That lifted our team up. It was third-and-forever.” Next with an 11 point lead Mahomes passed the ball to Sammy Watkins who scored a 60-yard touchdown pass making it a game-winning score. The last play ended with Damien Williams scoring a 38-yard touchdown and the Chiefs winning 31-20.
Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers head coach, has responded about their loss saying, “We had opportunities to win that and came up short. Win or lose, it doesn’t change how I feel about our team. I’m proud of all of the guys for what they did all year, and I’m proud of what they did today.”
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City’s quarterback was named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award becoming the youngest player ever to win the award at 24 years old. Mahomes also joins Ben Roethlisber and Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to get a Lombardi Trophy before their 25th birthday. “We never give up,” Mahomes said. “I think those guys, the leaders that we have on this team, they have that mindset that we never give up and we’re going to fight until the end.”
